Stu was more than the person who started VeloVets. He was the soul of this community. His vision brought us together, his passion kept us rolling, and his unwavering belief in the power of cycling to heal, connect, and strengthen Veterans inspired everything we do. Whether you knew him from the early days or met him at a recent group ride, you felt his warmth, his dedication, and his genuine care for every single member of this family.
These past weeks have been difficult. The roads feel a little quieter without him. The gatherings feel a little emptier. Grief has touched all of us in different ways, and it's okay to feel that weight. Stu would understand—he always did.
But Stu would also want us to keep pedaling.
He built VeloVets because he believed in its mission: to support Veterans through the freedom, camaraderie, and purpose that cycling provides. That mission doesn't end with his passing. If anything, it becomes more important. We carry forward not just his legacy, but his spirit—in every mile we ride, every Veteran we welcome, and every hand we extend to someone who needs this community.
VeloVets will continue. We will honor Stu by doing exactly what he taught us to do: showing up for each other, pushing through the hard climbs, and never letting a fellow rider fall behind.
To Stu's family, please know that your loss is shared by hundreds of Veterans who are better for having known him. To our members, thank you for being part of what Stu created. Let's ride on together.
With love and gratitude,
The VeloVets Family
We want to honor Stu Carter, considered the founder of the Air Force Cycling Team, who passed away in November 2025. Many of us knew, loved, and respected him. You can read about him on our website. In 1995 after moving to Offutt AFB from Izmir, Turkey, he became a member of the inaugural team called “Team Aim High”. He was able to work with people in high places to help our team get started and keep going, such as the Air Force Secretary, The Honorable Dr. Sheila E. Widnall, and later by the next SECAF, the Honorable F. Whitten Peters. Both SECAF Widnall and SECAF Peters would eventually become AFCT riders themselves! But at the same time, Stu would sit and chat with anyone and everyone. He loved the military and everyone in it. So after passing off the leadership of AFCT, he started VeloVets Sierra Vista in 2016 to help fellow disabled veterans become physically active in bicycling. (VeloVets Sierra Vista AZ). He successfully got many disabled veterans – 119 - off the couch and onto bicycles. VeloVets helps with camaraderie, training, and learning how to ride with disabilities. Stu continued to ride RAGBRAI, once riding a tandem solo, in honor of the missing man. He also rode RAGBRAI on a tandem with one of his legally blind vets. May we all care about each other and serve each other as Stu did.

In honor of Stu Carter, Congressman Ciscomani read the following letter into the Congressional Record.

Al,
Thank you, Dan, Leo and Phillip for your amazing job in shepherding us VeloVets safely to and from Kartchner Caverns SP today. In spite of the rain, our ride was a resounding success and we're grateful for the Cochise S.A.T.’s vital role in making it so.
Very Respectfully,
Ken Kingsley

Gunny,
Thank you for the delicious BBQ for our First Annual VeloVets Sierra Vista Stu Carter Memorial Bike Ride. The hot food was especially appreciated given the chilly, wet weather.
The ride event was a resounding success and the food served was a very large contribution. Looking forward to next year!
Very Respectfully,
Ken Kingsley
